Mint Julep recipe wins by a mile!
Preparing for the Derby takes time and research, we are here for both! We put our Kentucky heritage, pharmacy school education and Four Roses bourbon pick to good use. A homemade mint simple syrup beat the manufactured ‘mint elixir’ competition hands down!!!
The secret to a quick and quality Mint Simple Syrup is using only the freshest/most perfect mint leaves, washing them in warm water and cutting the leaves with a pair of herb scissors. We used the following 1:1:1 ratio: 1 cup water, 1 cup white sugar, 1 cup sliced mint leaves. After bringing the mixture to a light boil for 1 minute, we steeped the mint leaves with the syrup for 30 minutes, until the mixture was cooled. Then, we strained the mint leaves from the liquid using a simple metal strainer and stored in an air tight container in the fridge. Most sources state the syrup may be stored for up to 30 days in the refrigerator. But we’re not sure it will last that long.
